Everything you should know about vitamin K

Vitamin K is not one of the best known vitamins, but that does not mean that it does not play a relevant role in our health.

What is vitamin K for?

Vitamin K helps the body build healthy bones and tissues through proteins, as well as producing proteins that help blood to clot. This name encompasses a group of fat-soluble vitamins, as there are different types, which are essential for cardiovascular and bone health:

  • Vitamin K1 or phylloquinone
  • Vitamin K2 or menaquinone

Together with vitamin D, vitamin K helps to fix calcium in bone tissue, regulating bone metabolism and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

But that's not all, vitamin K also prevents vascular calcification. In other words, it prevents calcium from accumulating in excess in other parts of the body such as blood vessels, i.e. it prevents calcium from accumulating in excess in other parts of the body such as blood vessels.

Known as the coagulation vitamin, it also acts as a cofactor in the formation and activation of key proteins in the blood coagulation process.

What foods contain this vitamin?

Vitamin K is incorporated into our organism through our diet. Some of the most important sources of vitamin K1 are spinach, kale, broccoli, chard or romaine lettuce. In general, green vegetables are rich in vitamin K1 and the darker the color, the higher the amount.

But there are also fruits that provide this nutrient: blueberries, figs, pears, plums and kiwis are among the richest in this vitamin. Oils such as olive oil, rapeseed oil or soybean oil are also rich in this nutrient.

Vitamin K2, on the other hand, is found in foods of animal origin such as meat, fermented soy, eggs and dairy products. Vegans do not necessarily suffer from a deficiency of vitamin K2, since vitamin K2 can be synthesized by intestinal bacteria through vitamin K1.

You can also help yourself with food supplements such as Curarti Kalciumwhich contains calcium, magnesium, vitamin K and vitamin D, which contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. Its formula also incorporates vitamin D, which contributes to the normal absorption and utilization of calcium. But that's not all, its ingredients include turmeric, which helps maintain healthy joints and bones.
